My Bucket Metaphor List

You know how you can drive 30,000 miles a year without ever seeing a Honda CRV? Then you buy one and suddenly you realize every other car on the road is a CRV.

This phenemenon happened to me this month with -- of all things -- the use of buckets as a metaphor for personal finance concepts. As my clients know, I often use buckets that way myself when explaining money strategy. Seems I'm not the only one! First I ran across it in The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed, describing a simple yet powerful "pay yourself first" system of money management for those of us with fluctuating income.

Next time I turned around, there it was again in two articles from The Motley Fool, which I'm thrilled to announce has just endorsed my financial planner network, The Garrett Planning Network, as the way to get financial advice.

The network's new partnership with the Fool allows me to make those articles -- about diversifying for income tax purposes and managing money fears -- available to you in this newsletter. Also in this issue, a bucketload of news and resources about The Money Book, the COBRA premium subsidy, driving down debt, and more.

Enjoy!

  • Congrats to "The Money Book" contest winner!

Congratulations to Tammy Hildreth, winner of last month's giveaway of The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed!

Longtime readers may recognize Tammy (guest blog post) as co-founder of Network for Work (TM) professional networking group and co-host of its weekly radio show, recently profiled in the Nashua Telegraph. A project management and social media expert, her latest project is the 3rd Annual Women's Leadership Summit, coming June 11.

A big thanks to all who entered -- not least for the chuckle I got every time a new "Feed The Monkey" email arrived -- and to authors Joe D'Agnese and Denise Kiernan for the signed copy of the book!

Let's say I gave you $20 to play a 20-round game of coin flipping. For each round you win, you get $2.50; if you lose, you have to fork over a buck. I'll also give you the option of sitting out as many rounds as you want. How many rounds would you play?

Do you know what's going to happen to the stock market next week?... You might be willing to hazard some guesses, but chances are you ... wouldn't bet your entire retirement on them. This is why you have a well-diversified portfolio... But don't limit yourself to just asset diversification. Build a portfolio with plenty of tax diversification too...
