Hollis,
NH - Sherrill St. Germain, MBA, CFP®, Principal of Hollis-based New Means Financial Planning, was quoted on the topic of financial planning for career changers in the June issue Financial Advisor magazine.
The Financial Advisor magazine article, The Ultimate Asset?, explores a promising new development in financial planning: the idea that a person's career should be thought of as a potentially evolving financial asset with important implications for his or her overall financial plan. In the past, careers were usually modeled as relatively linear: a series of increasingly more responsible jobs resulting in steady pay increases from first job thru retirement.
But with the multiple major career transitions more typical these days, income may vary dramatically over the career span, so a more dynamic treatment is in order. Besides the potential for increased job satisfaction and financial planning opportunities, St. Germain observed that this new approach - thinking of career also as a financial asset - could deliver an additional benefit. "This model might facilitate a downshifting transition to retirement because some people find it's a scary jump to go from full time to zero."
